One evening last week, a Twitter friend posted that the following day was his birthday. He stated that what he wanted for his birthday was for us to do a kindness to someone on his day. Give some food to a homeless person, smile at a stranger, that sort of thing. Nothing big. Things we don’t normally think make a difference.
But they do.
I thought, well, that’s certainly something I could do. So, I did (although, the opportunities didn’t present themselves until the day after his birthday). And you know what? In each instance where I did the simplest of things for someone else – two people felt better. Not just the recipient, but this giver.
Can you imagine the spread of love, care, simple enjoyment, even the possibility of a heart starting to heal or a mind fining a bit of peace, that would occur if we simply did this all the time? It’s not hard! It’s likely one of the easiest things I’ve done. I’ve done similar things in the past, but never with the real understanding that it was helping me just as much as the other person.
Let’s give each other this same gift all the time, how about it? You’ll be glad you did.
